What a season! I really was taken by the commitment, attitude and discipline that our students displayed during these gruelling 11 days of music-making. More than that; now, in September (more than 2 months after the camp) I can clearly see the benefits and effects of this rigorous work in my own students, who despite the long summer months, have managed to carry through their excellent skills and love of practising (yes, I am not kidding: LOVE) that they acquired at JVL, into their regular practicing routine at home, and I have no doubt that my colleagues from JVL would report similar successes. It is heartening to see kids being so passionately involved in all musical activities (even those that they don’t see as practical for their instrumental skills, but incredibly important, such as ear training etc) let alone their instrumental or voice studies, ensembles, orchestras and of course the Musical Theatre!
According to countless phone conversations, great many letters and e-mails I have received from parents, students and the faculty, the 10th Anniversary Season of JVL SSPA was a great success, and as both parents of one of our piano students put it: “It was a concentrated blast of musical enthusiasm and encouragement in the middle of a slow hot summer”. And I would like to take the opportunity and to congratulate everyone involved for the great success we have had in 2011.
Everyone has benefited from tremendous learning opportunities and have experienced a lot of personal growth as musicians and as people.
We are now updating the information for the new 2012 season and I would like to invite you to frequently check for the updates, both in content as well as in new videos of performances from students and faculty from 2011. The 10th Anniversary Slideshow, made by Alexandra Lakirovich, has just been posted on the website.
The registration for 2012 is now open, and I look forward to seeing everyone again in 2012!
Thank you again for making this season the best and most memorable one yet!

Welcome from the Music Director
It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the eleventh season of the JVL Summer School for Performing Arts. As you browse through these pages, you will discover the breadth of our musical offerings. Our Preparatory, Intermediate and Advanced Studies program is carefully designed to provide an enjoyable musical experience and a thorough musical training for those students who are at the onset of their musical journey through to students who will become the next generation of young performers. The course offers its participants a wonderful opportunity to combine their intensive music studies and concert performances with recreational activities. The aim of the SSPA is to develop an appreciation of music that will last through their lifetime and ability for them to receive greater enjoyment of a musical performance through that knowledge and understanding.
The program of the School will include instrumental and voice private lessons, master classes and workshops, an opera program, chamber music classes, orchestral and ensemble classes, concert performances, a Music Theatre program, solo performances with the SSPA orchestras and seminars, as well as the Piano Teacher Professional Development Program. Individual instruction is only one part of the JVL curriculum. By placing special emphasis on chamber music, JVL SSPA gives students the opportunity to work in small groups where their individual contributions can be appreciated and critiqued. Opportunities for performance are given to many chamber groups throughout the season. All that will help to create a rich tapestry of learning and exploration for children. JVL SSPA's remarkable faculty — gifted and creative master teachers and musicians dedicated to the fine art of teaching, support all of this musical activity.
This season we have prepared for you a very special program and activities that, without a doubt, will be the most memorable experience for all students and faculty.
And we certainly will continue using the facilities of Canadore College on Lake Nipissing in North Bay, Ontario, with large air-conditioned rehearsals spaces, our own Auditorium, very comfortable accommodation and excellent recreational facilities, and the food, as usual, promises to be something special.
These are the things that you must come to JVL SSPA to experience for yourself. I extend to you a warm welcome, and hope to see you at our Camp. Thank you for your interest in the JVL Summer School for Performing Arts.
